Register on the Population List

The Population List gives the number of inhabitants in a municipality and is of great importance, since the economic contributions from the central and regional government to the Town Hall are based on the number of registered inhabitants in the town. These funds are to provide town services i.e. Local Police, doctors, schools, cleaning, lighting, infrastructure, etc. Therefore, the more registered inhabitants, the more money will be granted to the Town Hall for these services.

Foreigners living in Nerja for a minimum of 3 months should register on the List.

As well as receiving better services from the Town Hall, by registering you can benefit from the following:

  • Apply for a doctor at the Health Centre.
  • Register your children at school.
  • Buy a car.
  • Obtain the Pensioners Card Andalucia 65, for discounts on provincial busses, discounts on glasses, applying for an emergency Tele-Assistance button for people living alone or who are ill, etc.
  • A discount for pensioners on the Nerja Urban Bus.
  • A discount in the Municipal Car Park.
  • Become a member of the Pensioners Centre.
  • Get married in Nerja.
  • Register as a Common Law Couple.
  • EU-Citizens can vote in the Local and European Elections.
  • EU-Citizens can stand as a Candidate in the Local Elections.

Registering on the Population List has no relation with paying taxes or the Inland Revenue (Hacienda).

To register on the List, you only have to present yourself at the Foreigners Department of Nerja Town Hall (ground floor) with the following documents:

  • Residence Card.
  • If you do not have this document, you must present your NIE or Residence Certificate and your Passport.
  • Any of the following documents in your name: an electricity, water, telephone or IBI bill, a Rental Contract or Title Deed.

Population List Renovation

All foreigners must renew the Padron every 2 years.

If you move house, you must notify the List Registry of the Town Hall (ground floor) by submitting a receipt or contract that shows your name and new address.

If you move to another town in Spain and register on their list, that other Town Hall will inform Nerja directly so that we can deregister you from our list.

Registering on the Population List is free and you will obtain a certificate the following day.
